In 2012, The Perth Mint’s highly regarded Australian Lunar II Silver Coin Series celebrated the Year of the Dragon, the fifth animal in the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac.
Those born in the Lunar Year of the Dragon are considered to be confident, ambitious, and full of vitality. They are often seen as natural leaders, bringing good fortune and possessing a charismatic presence. The Dragon is compatible with the Rat and Monkey but should be cautious of the Dog. Other Years of the Dragon include 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, 1940, and 1928.

Lunar Dragon Design
These 2012 coins feature a striking depiction of a dragon, a powerful symbol of strength, prosperity, and protection in Chinese culture. The reverse design showcases a traditional Chinese dragon, a long, scaled, serpentine creature with four legs, and a “pearl of wisdom”. The Chinese character for ‘Dragon’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Dragon’ are prominently displayed, along with The Perth Mint’s iconic ‘P’ mintmark.
The obverse of the coin carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the monetary denomination.
Australian Legal Tender
The coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
