Original 2021 Maple Leaf Design
The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, and the reverse of the coin showcases the signature Maple Leaf so closely associated with Canadian nationalism and reflective of the Canadian pride.
The reverse of the coin has a new change. The maple leaf privy mark, is similar to that of the 1 oz Maple Leaf gold coins. Each privy contains a small, micro-engraved “23” which is visible only under magnification. The “23” will change annually to correspond with the year of issue.
The second change, the new background for the coin was precisely machined by the Royal Canadian Mint onto their master die and creates a unique light diffracting pattern which has not been seen on other bullion products.

The coin is issued as legal tender since its inception in 1988.
