Lunar Monkey Design
The obverse carries the right side profile of Queen Elizabeth II encircled by inscriptions. Along the coin’s rim reads the legal tender, country of origin “AUSTRALIA”, Her Majesty’s name, “Elizabeth II”, and the weight and purity “1 oz 9999 Gold”.
The reverse of each coin depicts an adult monkey sitting on a branch of a peach tree, which is symbolic of longevity and immortality. The Chinese character for ‘monkey’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Monkey’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
